Piano Workshop – A New Departure with Philip Fowke

Philip Fowke

Known for his many BBC Promenade Concert appearances, numerous recordings and broad range of repertoire, Philip Fowke has appeared in many of the major concert halls worldwide with leading conductors including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Sir Simon Rattle and Gennadi Rozhdestvensky. Philip Fowke is currently Senior Fellow of Keyboard at Trinity College of Music and is recognised for his teaching, coaching and tutoring in which he enjoys exploring students’ potential, encouraging them to develop their own individuality. Unconventional and alternative, he avoids methods and systems, preferring a more holistic, imaginative approach. He is a regular tutor at the Chetham’s International Summer School and was on the jury of the 2nd International Shura Cherkassky Piano Competition, held in Milan in 2012.

Events Description

Presented by Jackdaws Music Education Trust, A New Departure with Philip Fowke is designed for those who feel they have never really discovered how to learn a piece with confidence and security.

The course also addresses fundamental issues which are so often overlooked in the earlier stages of learning. It provides a level playing field for all participants, is strictly non-competitive and is a forum in which all can contribute usefully without pressure, without nerves and above all with pleasure.

Participants should bring no music at all. Instead, a selection of very short pieces, or even just a few bars of an elementary to a modest standard, will be provided in the first session by Philip. Over the weekend, the piece or pieces will be studied in such a way as to make them ready for performance for the traditional end-of-course concert on the Sunday afternoon for those who feel willing to volunteer. There is no obligation to play whatsoever.

All courses are held at Jackdaws in the village of Great Elm to the West of Frome in Somerset, roughly 30 minutes drive from Bath. Frome train station is roughly 2.5 miles from Jackdaws with direct trains from Bristol, Bath, Cardiff and London.
